7 reasons why i will not follow you back on Twitter – updated

with 11 comments

Here’s my list of reasons why i will not follow you back on Twitter.

1. You have no user avatar, if you don’t have an avatar how should i know who i’m talking?

2. You list no website, or no bio. I follow people that have same interests as i have, with some exceptions. If you don’t have a website and in your bio you wrote Lorem Ipsum, i will not follow you back.

3. Your website is a MySpace profile.

4. You’re following over 1,000 users, have 10 followers, and no updates or you just won a laptop or 10000$.

5. Your profile features that you are an expert (SEO Expert, Photopshop Expert etc).

6. Your always tweet about you and your website.

7. Your updates make references to any need to achieve more Twitter followers.

8. You are only talking about how much money one can make by joining different affiliate sites. (thanks @Anghus)

  1. Sounds good to me. I WILL give them a chance to do a few updates as I’m somewhat of a lurker in forums and on blog sites until I get familiar w/the program/site.And I’m okay w/MySpace websites as that’s where my network of startup artists/bands hang out until they can afford a website.

  2. I’m with you on this Cristian!

Those “I just won a laptop” followers are driving me nuts!

    • Well i get about 20-25 followers, each day, that want me to know that they won a laptop or 10000$, congrats, but i will not follow, you will be blocked :)

  3. The I-Won-a-Laptop people are the only ones I block.

I must admit it’s gotten easier to not follow people for nothing more than that none of their tweets interest me. I fully expect they didn’t follow me because I said anything of interest to tjem, either.

But all this is bound to happen when there are so many things encouraging us to keep score. If your are even remotely competitive–I am, by nature–you’ll get pulled into scorekeeping now and again. I guess I wish I wouldn’t. So much.

At least I stay away from tweeters I am positive I wouldnot want to have a conversation with.

  4. Mult mai tweet-uiesti :) Anyway, interesante link-urile pe care le dai pe twitter, abia m-am inscris si eu si te urmaresc pentru ca habar n-am de toate draciile astea cu twitter.

    Bafta!

  5. I agree with everything that’s been said. One thing I do is that when someone new follows me, I immediately go to their twitter page and go back 3 pages worth of posts to see whether their pages are social-only, or actually providing real value. With the other social sites, I don’t need anymore noise just value.

  6. Those were the first things i learned here when I started and have always shared the information to newbies when they get on to twitter.

Pretty cool that you had it written here so that i can just refer them to your site.

    Very helpful = )

  7. In the days of yore, when Usenet ruled, these discussions orbited the concept of the “killfile”. You’d “plonk” someone, like a troll or anyone always looking to incite a flamewar. Unfollowing, not following, or blocking is pretty much the same kinda filter, but more civil.

I don’t have any rules, though, which for me, at least, get me thinking I’m developing a bureaucracy of the Self. But I am sympathetic to those who find a structure of evaluation with explicit criteria helpful.

  10. This is a great post! I agree completely; especially with the “Expert” one. It seems like every other person on here is an “expert”
